After a lengthy delay it’s time to get back on track and hand out the Mike On Sports Weekly Awards. If you want to nominate someone for the No Class Jerk of the Week (like, I don’t know, Jim Carty) or the Mike’s Grandma Classy Nice Person of the Week (like, I don’t know, not Jim Carty), you can do so by sending your nominations in to MikeOnSports@yahoo.com. I’m taking any and all nominations of anybody deserving it all the way back to February 15th.
Be sure to tell me why that person is getting your nomination, and I’ll publish the best takes when the awards are given out Friday morning!
Oooooooof Course, last night ESPN breaks the story that Luc Richard Mbah a Moute may miss at least the first game against Mississippi Valley State to nurse his sprained ankle. I’m not worried about my pick yet, but if he’s not in the line-up in the Sweet 16, I’ll begin to worry…
Also, before I go on this rant, I must say congrats to “The Mount” on their win last night, and good luck staying within 50 against UNC. With that being said…

Be honest…you watched American Idol last night, didn’t you? Dancing with the D-listers?
Ok, ok, maybe you decided to keep your man card and tune into some basketball. Now, be honest, what was a bigger draw at 7 o’clock last night - the two worst teams in the NCAA Field of 65 fighting it out for the right to get destroyed by North Carolina, or freakishly big Kenny George of UNC-Asheville clumsily lumbering up and down the court, narrowly avoiding the Jumbotron Scoreboard that hangs high above? If you’re like me, there’s something deep in that part of you that loves to watch car crashes that can’t switch away from watching a player as big and uncoordinated as George try to find his way around the court, even if it’s an NIT game.
Whatever you tuned into last night, chances are it wasn’t the NCAA’s Play-In Game. If you did, you are in the vast minority. Don’t worry, I don’t blame you for watching something else, there’s really no draw in this game. Neither of these two teams would have qualified for either the NIT or the CBI, making this, based on the quality of the teams, the 13th most intriguing basketball game last night.
So what can the NCAA do to make this game much more meaningful? The answer is simple – Make Conference Champions immune from the play in game.
I’ll explain…
