The MOS 1st Weekend All-Tournament Team

Haven’t picked enough brackets this month?  Want in on the only MOS endorsed NCAA Hockey Pool?  Let me know by emailing me HERE

It was a wild weekend of basketball, with many unknowns making names for themselves, while other stars ended their seasons with a dud.  But who stole the show on the NCAA’s first weekend of madness?  Let’s take a look…

THE M.O.S. ALL FIRST WEEKEND 1st TEAM

C: Brook Lopez, Stanford- The Cardinal’s game plan when the game was on the line:  Bring the ball down, dump it in to Lopez.  It worked, as they came from behind to beat Marquette and now face a tough Texas squad in Houston.

F: Michael Beasley, Kansas State- Beasley’s Wildcat days are likely done, as the freshman sensation only improved his stock after a solid weekend in which he posted a double/double average.

F: Charles Rhodes, Mississippi State- The Senior nearly led the Bulldogs to an upset of top-seeded Memphis with his outstanding effort.

G: Stephen Curry, Davidson-Curry’s 40 ppg and 5 steals/game average helped to lift the Wildcats to two upset wins over the weekend, making Cinderellas of themselves as they take on Wisconsin in the school’s first trip to the sweet 16 since the 60s.

G: Tyrone Brazelton, Western Kentucky- The Senior drained 6 Threes in the Hilltoppers upset of 5th seeded Drake, as they rode the upset wave in Tampa to a spot in the sweet 16.

Coach: Jay Wright, Villanova- Down 18 to Clemson, ‘Nova didn’t pack it in.  Instead, the Wildcats turned up the pressure, and are headed to the Sweet 16 as a result.

Most Outstanding Player: Stephen Curry, Davidson

THE M.O.S. ALL FIRST WEEKEND 2nd TEAM

C: Kevin Love, UCLA-The Freshman has averaged 19.5 ppg so far, along with a tournament leading 6.5 blocks per game.  Western Kentucky might be in for a rude awakening when they go toe-to-toe with this beast.

F: Joe Alexander, West Virginia: The Junior led the Mountaineers to an upset win over second seeded Duke, and now head out west for a date with a beatable Xavier squad in the Sweet 16.

F: Joe Crawford, Kentucky- The Wilcats’ first round exit can’t be blamed on Crawford, who’s 33 point effort was about all the offense Kentucky could muster.

G: Ty Lawson, North Carolina- The guard’s return to the line-up is the main reason the Tar Heels cruised through the first weekend, and look to be on the path towards yet another national title.

G: Trevon Hughes, Wisconsin- Hughes caught fire in the second round, powering Wisconsin to the sweet sixteen with his unstoppable touch.

Coach: Bob McKillop, Davidson- The Wildcats’ have won 22 straight, and are headed to their first Sweet 16 since 1968.

THE M.O.S ALL FIRST WEEKEND DUD-TEAM

C: Roy Hibbert, Georgetown- The 7”2′ Hibbert somehow managed to only come down with 8 boards in the Hoyas two tournament games, a main cause to their second round exit.

F: Kyle Singler, Duke- The Frosh hit the wall late in the season, and never recovered.  His 11 point output against Belmont was his only double-digit showing in the Blue Devils final four games.

F: Pat Calathes, St. Joe’s- The Senior picked the worst time to have his worst game of the season, posting only 6 points in his last collegiate performance.  At least he made the dance, something his brother (Florida’s Nick) can’t say.

G: DeMarcus Nelson, Duke- The first team all-ACC teamer didn’t do anything to help the Blue Devils’ tournament hopes, as the Dukies will spend next weekend at home.

G:AJ Price, UConn-  Season average: 14.4ppg; Tournament showing 0 points.  ’nuff said.

Coach: Mike Krzyzewski, Duke- The Blue Devils are in the midst of their second longest final four drought in Coach K’s history, and nearly had this one ended with an inexcusable loss to 15th seeded Belmont before West Virginia put the Dukies out of their misery.

Good call on Jay Wright. My favorite coach in the country, love everything about him, from the way his team plays to the way he dresses on the sidelines (nice threads coach). Go ‘Nova!
