Bracketless Mondays (THE FINALE!)

December 29th, 2008

Last Bracketless Monday of the 08-09 season, as long process of tracking the field of 65 begins in only 7 days.  I’ll have the full schedule of bracket release dates out next week.  Mark your calenders.

Tonight’s the night many have been waiting for, as the daunting Big East schedule kicks off with a dandy.   But, as always, before we gaze ahead we must first look back at the weekend that was…

Saturday…

West Virginia went into Columbus and handed Ohio Statetheir first loss of the season.   They didn’t just win either, they smacked the Buckeyes around to the tune of 76-48.  While the Buckeyes are without the services of David Lightey, who is on the shelve with an injury, the Mountaineers  are kicking things into high gear with their second consecutive blowout against an Ohio school many predict to be dancing in March (they beat Miami last weekend)

Louisville obviously went to work during the holidays, as the Cardinals looked much better in their win over UAB then they did in last weekend’s loss to Minnesota.  The Cardinals could have ill-afforded another out-of-conference loss heading into Big East play if they wanted a spot on the top 2 lines come Selection Sunday.

Sunday…

Bradley beat Southern Illinois rather soundly.  That puts the Suluki’s at 5-7, and well out of the tournament picture at this point.

Evansville beat Drake, upping the Aces to 9-2 on the season.  Early on, they look to be the surprise faves in a strong MVC.

Florida State was able to pull away from Western Kentucky to avoid the upset.  Here’s what I’ve learned about the Noles: If you have a big man, you can dominate them, if you don’t,  they’re a pesky team to bounce…

Virginia went into Atlanta and beat Georgia Tech, basically cementing the worries I had about the Yellow Jackets.  Their forecast for March is shakey at best.

Siena finally picked up a nice non-conference win, beating St. Joe’s on the road.  They’ll now hope the Hawks have a good enough showing in the A10 to qualify this as a “quality win”.

I was a little convinced Texas Tech could give Stanford’s undefeated record a run for its money.  I was wrong.  The Cardinal beat Pat Knight’s boys, who have now given up 100+ points twice.  Johnny Dawkin’s team should be undefeated when they welcome in the Arizona schools this weekend.

Tonight…

Temple plays Villanova in the marquee game of the Philly rivalries.  The Owls need to pick things up, or that big win over Tennessee will have gone for naught.

UConn welcomes in Georgetown, a great game to kick off what should be a mega-entertaining Big East season.  Combined record in this one, a mere 20-1.

Baylor better be ready for Portland Statewhen the two battle tonight in Waco.  The Vikings are 10-3, and enter riding a three game winning streak that includes an impressive road win at Gonzaga.

Davidson hits the road to take on the College of Charleston, in what will easily be the Wildcats biggest test in their SoCon schedule.

Cincinatti plays Memphisin an intriguing game.   Something tells me the Bearcats will need this one once the Big East puts a sizable dent in their 9-3 record.
