Mail Bag!

Thursday January 15th, 2009

Plenty of messages (both good and bad) last night by college basketball’s squads from coast to coast, with plenty more set to go out tonight.

Last Night’s Action

Michigan State 78, Penn State 73: The Sparties led by 13 at the half, and picked up a road win over the Lions, who will likely be on the outside looking in once again at next week’s bracket.

Ohio 66, Miami (OH) 62: The Bobcats show they’re ready to compete in the MAC, knocking of the heavy favorite Red Hawks in Oxford.

Duke 70, Georgia Tech 56: The Dukies keep rolling, now 15-1 on the season.

Dayton 72, Fordham 71:The Flyers narrowly avoid a devastating upset to the 2-12 (now 2-13) Rams.

Georgetown 88, Syracuse 74:  The Hoyas pick up their second big win in the Big East, while the Orange will likely fall to at least the third line in next week’s bracket.

Florida 68, Auburn 65: The Gators go on the road and pick up a solid win, improving to an impressive 15-2 on the season.

LSU 85, South Carolina 68: In one of the biggest statement games on the night, the Tigers may have earned themselves a bubble bid in next week’s bracket.

Ole Miss 74, Arkansas 65:  The Hogs are coming back to earth after their monster non-conference showing.

Illinois State 65, Drake 61: The Red Birds re-establish themselves as the favorites in the MVC.

Creighton 73, Southern Illinois 72 (OT): The Jayhawks meanwhile won’t let the Red Birds run away with things.

Illinois 66, Michigan 51:  The Wolverines must learn to manufacture points when the 3 balls aren’t falling.  After leading 31-30 at the half, the Illini outscored the Maize-n-Blue 36-20 in the second set.

Colorado State 71, UNLV 69: Just a week after looking like the favorites in the Mountain West, the Rebels are 1-2 in conference play.

Wake Forest 83, Boston College 63:  Wake continues to make thier case for the #1 overall seed in next week’s bracket.

Miami (FL) 62, Maryland 60:  One of those games that looks like it could make or break each team’s ticket to the dance come march.

Texas A&M 84, Baylor 73:  The Aggies jumped out to an 11 point halftime lead and never looked back.  Count them in as the #3 team in the B12 at this point.

Tonight’s Action

Purdue @ Northwestern: The Cats need this one if they want to garner any attention for the bracket in the coming weeks, while Purdue can ill-afford to drop this one in Welsh-Ryan – one of the B10’s most dangerous of venues.

UConn @ St. John’s:The Red Storm have already played spoiler to Notre Dame at home, can they do the same to the Huskies?

Middle Tennessee @ Western Kentucky:  The Sun Belt’s top dogs meet up in an early season statement game.

Xavier @ Rhode Island: The Rams best shot to get back in the tournament discussion.

Minnesota @ Wisconsin: The Gophers, 15-1 on the year, continue to fly under the radar.  A win tonight would send a clear message to the rest of the conference on just how good Tubby Smith’s Gophers are.

Washington @ Oregon:The bubblicious game of the night.

Arizona State @ USC: The Trojans have some work to do, and a win tonight would be a nice step in the right direction.

Arizona @ UCLA: The latest tip of the night may be the most intriguing.  The ‘Cats have struggled on the road all season, while UCLA is unbeaten at Pauly.  Needless to say, ‘zona has their work cut out for them in this one.  They’ll likely need it to stay in next week’s field of 65.
