Bubble Busting Bonanza!

A fantastic night for bubble teams who happened not to play.  For the ones in action…not so much.  Several teams lost must-win games, leaving themselves either NIT-bound or hanging on for dear life.  Tomorrow edition of Bracketology 2009 Presented by BetUS.com is sure to see a ton of changes.  Just how crazy was it?  Let’s take a look at the night that was.

LAST NIGHT

Northwestern 64, Purdue 61: The Wildcats slim tourney chances stay alive.  They’ll need a win at OSU this weekend for any shot.  Purdue’s hot streak looks to be over, as well as their chances at a spot in the Power 16.

NC State 74, Boston College 69:  The Wolfpack continue to play spoiler as the Eagles sit squarely on the bubble, and must win against lowly Georgia Tech this weekend to stay alive going into Atlanta.

Georgia Tech 78, Miami (Fla) 68:  Maybe the Jackets aren’t so lowly after all.  Miami’s chances take a MONSTER blow with this.  A win against NC State this weekend would be the first step, while they’ll need to make noise in Atlanta to re-enter the conversation.

UNC 86, Va Tech 78:  The Hokies continue to play tough, but this daunting end-of-season schedule is the reason I’ve been leaving them out of my field.  With a road trip to Tallahassee this weekend, they’re all but done.

Pitt 90, Marquette 75:  The Eagles miss Dominique James in a bad way, while Pitt looks more and more secure on that top line.

Georgia 90, Kentucky 85:  Good night Irene, the tournament streak is over.

Vanderbilt 75, LSU 67:  Just when the world started to believe in the Tigers, they go off and lose one like this at home.  They’ll need the SEC tournament to get back into the Power 16.

Mississippi Sate 80, Florida 71:  Saturday’s showdown with Kentucky takes a bit of a blow after both teams lose last night, turning the weekend’s showdown in to battle to see who gets a #1 seed in the NIT.

Minnesota 51, Wisconsin 46:  Big first step for the Gophers, setting up a gigantic showdown with Michigan on Saturday, in the old barn.

Missouri 73, Oklahoma 64:  The Tigers fight for a spot as a two seed with the win, while the Sooners drop there.

Texas Tech 84, Kansas 65:  Big blow for the Jayhawks, who likely fall to a #3 seed after the disappointing showing in Lubbock.

UNLV 46, Air Force 43; San Diego State 68, Colorado State 59:  Saturday’s play-in game is officially on.

TONIGHT

Tennessee @ South Carolina:  The winner is pretty much locked, while the loser slides into bubbleville

Providence @ Villanova:  The Friars look to lock themselves into the dance, while ‘Nova hopes to solidify a spot in the Power 16.

Illinois @ Penn State: PSU must split their final two to get to 10 B10 wins.  Its either this one in Happy Valley against the Illini, who they beat in a  38-33 slugfest a couple weeks back, or on the road at Iowa this weekend.

Dayton @ Xavier:  The Flyers took the first meeting, while X looks to claim the A10 with a win.  A loss moves the Flyers AND Rhode Island into a three way tie for first with one to play.

Cal @ Arizona:  ‘Zona likely needs a sweep this weekend over the NoCal schools to or else the nation’s two longest tournament streaks will come to an end.
