Bracketology 2009 Presented by BetUS.com!

Friday March 6, 2009

Not a ton of time to break down storylines today, so we’ll get right to it…

A ton of bubble teams took monster blows since Wednesday, causing major shake-ups to the field.  Kentucky, Florida, and Arizona are gone after tough losses while plenty of other bubble teams took major blows.   This will sort itself out over the next week and a half, but as of today, it couldn’t be messier.

For the first time in awhile, we have a new #1 seed after Oklahoma fell to Missouri.  Duke returns to the top line after beating Florida State in Durham to set up an ACC Title Tilt with fellow top seed UNC this weekend.

A friendly reminder, the next bracket is out Monday, and new brackets will be out every day from until the final bracket, set to be released on Selection Sunday at 5:45 pm (15 minutes prior to CBS’ Selection Show). Once again, I’ll be live-blogging on Selection Sunday and will be sharing the final selection process with you, the valued reader.

Conference tournaments are underway.  Courtney Basham at The Bracket Board does a fantastic job with what he calls the ONE STOP SHOP, a great tool for tracking all 30 conference tournaments.

The committee will swap teams one line to either a) keep them closer to home or b) avoid rematches prior to the Sweet 16 when possible.  Plenty of swaps in this bracket, here they are:

Penn State/Utah State swapped 9/10 seeds to avoid a B10 rematch

         Michigan/Davidson  swapped 11/12 seeds to avoid a B10 rematch

FSU/Gonzaga swapped 5/6 seeds to keep the Zags on the West Coast

Utah/Butler swapped 7/8 seeds to keep both teams closer to home

Boston College/Texas A&M swapped 11/12 seeds to avoid an ACC rematch.

With that in mind, here is today’s bracket (click to enlarge, you may need to click twice to get the bracket at full size):

March Madness is here – get the latest MARCH MADNESS ODDS at BetUS.Com!

Boston College:  The Eagles are sent to the bubble after being upset by NC State.

San Diego State: The Aztechs are in for now, but must win their tilt with fellow bubble-boy UNLV this weekend.

Michigan:  Thanks to everyone above them losing, the Wolverines jump 5 spots since Wednesday, all while sitting back and preparing for Saturday’s monster showdown with Minnesota.

St. Mary’s: The Gaels have Patty Mills back, and with it a spot in the field.  They still can’t afford to lose to anybody not named Gonzaga, and Mills must show he’s healthy enough to be dangerous in the tournament.

Rhode Island:  The Rams look keyed for the #2 spot in the A10.  A deep tournament run could put them in the field.

Arizona:  This weekend’s showdown with Stanford is must-win for the Cats if they want to keep their tournament streak alive.

Florida:  The Gators fall out after losing to Mississippi State on the road.  A home tilt with Kentucky will decide the fate of both teams heading into the SEC tournament.

Maryland:  The Terps get Virginia this weekend before heading to Atlanta for the ACC tourney.
